Camden Town’s New Wind Tunnel?

I ate at a nice little Caribbean place called Guanabana for a friend’s birthday last night. It’s just a short walk from Camden Town station so we caught the Northern Line from London Bridge.

We hopped off the tube and headed for the exit. As we rounded the bend I noticed that only one escalator was working, due to London’s ‘investment’ program. I like how they’ve renamed maintenance to investment. It’s supposed to leave us feeling pleased with the fact that the Jubilee line is never running over the weekend. It also covers the array of delays and partial closures across the Underground network that we’re forced to accept.

Heading up the escalator I was overwhelmed by the amount of wind blowing straight down against us. It felt like I was standing in the middle of a wind tunnel. Seriously, I felt like a new test plane at a Boeing research facility! I tried hiding behind the guy in front of me but that didn’t work. It just kept coming from all angles. The fact that the other escalators were closed and boarded up caused all of the incoming wind to head straight down our way. Annoyingly, it was also quite cold.

As soon as we stepped off the escalator towards the exit, everything subsided. That made me realise that it was probably set up, purposefully, for one of two reasons:

1)      It’s a test that some sorry sod is filming, trying to see how strong your hair gel is. (Camden’s known to host all sorts of colourful people sporting a range of Mohawks, punk hairstyles and perms.

2)      It’s there to blow away your sins and rid you of a guilty conscience before heading out to commit some unspeakable acts in one of the many pubs and clubs dotted around Camden!
